The FISH TRAP (Why Consistency is such a big Problem?)
I get hundreds of messages from ambitious and determined students saying, “Sfurti, I want to do so much, I can change the world if I just execute all that is there in my head, all I have to do is get rid of “lazy old me!”
I got a Whatsapp message last week while I was sitting at Delhi Airport from my cousin sitting at Bangalore. The problem is historic as well as geographically spread; everyone has seen the symptoms.
Before I tell you the causes of this disease, let’s see this message from my cousin!
In simple words he wants to get rid of laziness! And this time he doesn’t want the same advice. He actually wants to change…
So I thought of explaining him the six mood changes of a fish! Let’s go…
How many of you have gone through this phase where you feel you are handcuffed? You wanted to do something but it doesn’t get done? You wanted to top the class? Or you wanted to be a top performer?
Then you started…you were immersed in excitement of winning..and again your old enemy Laziness showed up! And everything went for a toss!
The problem is so generic that everyone experiences it! But no one takes it seriously! And even if we take it seriously for few days, the seriousness slowly drips away! And then it transforms into that ever-diminishing guilt and slowly turns into regret and then slowly takes the form of self-hatred! And after the person has already lost his way, it becomes almost difficult for him and people around him to believe that he can do something.
Today I want to bring the phases of laziness and how something inside you fools you! Let me explain this in the form of fish. This analogy may slightly looks humorous but definitely will speak to the point.
1. The Lazy Fish.
The fish has already hunted her prey and now she thinks she doesn’t need anything for next few hours. She has done enough work and now she needs to rest or maybe spend some time on the internet.
THIS IS SIMILAR TO MY COUSIN WHO HAS JUST FINISHED HIS WORK AND THINKS HE HAS DONE ENOUGH.
2. The Guilty Fish.
After wasting good time on the internet, now the fish is feeling the heat. She has wasted enough time. Her mother asked her to do the homework and she has not even finished even 10% of it. Also she wanted to save money but couldn’t help herself from looking at the sale. She is feeling the guilt so much that she just wants to study. Now she decided that no more she will allow her careless attitude to take control and she is determined to get the best results anyhow. Yes, the fish is becoming wise!
THIS IS SIMILAR TO MY COUSIN, WHO MESSAGED ME TO FIND THE SOLUTION. NOW HE KNOWS HIS LAZINESS IS KILLING HIM AND HE WANTS TO DO SOMETHING. HE WANTS TO MAKE A PLAN! FINALLY AFTER THE OVER SATURATION OF GUILT, HE DECIDED TO BE WISE!
3. The Wise Fish.
This fish is wise. She has a proper plan. She started getting up on time, sleeping on time, taking care of her health, making sure she doesn’t eat junk etc. She now hangs out with positive people. She now knows the value of time!
THIS IS SIMILAR TO MY WISE COUSIN, MAKING A PERFECT ROUTINE FOR HIMSELF. AND NOW HE KNOWS, HE CAN ACHIEVE THIS AND GUESS WHAT, HE STARTED FEELING CONFIDENT.
4. The Confident Fish.
Now the fish is very confident because she started following the routine and life is looking as full of opportunities. She believes she is powerful enough to create her own army in the community and eventually occupy a new territory in the deep sea. She no longer fears the big fish. She know she can compete. She know she is strong, active, agile and fast.
Now. This is LIKE MY CONFIDENT COUSIN WHO STARTED WORKING FULL FLEDGED AND GOT THE RESULTS. HE WANTS TO BECOME THE BIGGEST GAME DESIGNER AND NOW HE KNOWS HE CAN! YES, HE CAN!
BUT THEN COMES THE TIPPING POINT; THIS CONFIDENCE TURNS INTO OVERCONFIDENCE!
6. The overconfident fish.
Now this fish thinks, it is okay to relax as she has done enough and this is where her downfall starts. SAME LIKE MY COUSIN!
7. The Trapped Fish.
And now as soon the fish starts becoming confident about getting results! She is trapped by in Over Confidence bubble! And the cycle continues and continues…
And slowly she will turn to a lazy fish! Similarly my cousin will also turn lazy. And this is why he wrote in that message that for few days I become normal but again it starts again.
Real Life Example of Fish Trap!
- You start Exercising, Continue, Feel Confident, Drop it, again back to start!
- You start with healthy Diet, Continue, Feel Confident, Drop it, Again back to start!
- You start with meditation, Continue, Feel Confident, Drop it, Again back to start!
- Become serious about something, Continue, Feel Confident, Drop it, Again back to start!
So what is the way out?
1. Inducing a hypothetical Auto-Controlled Fear.
The fish needs to induce a hypothetical auto-controlled fear. All she needs to tell herself that if she won’t hunt for good food and be healthy, she can be a prey of some big fish!
Why auto-controlled? One should know how to induce and dissuade fear! My cousin needs to induce that fear in him every morning about how he can be replaced easily. How if he doesn’t work, his so called dreams would be just memories!
2. Feeding the Willpower muscle.
The Willpower muscle can be developed by good exercise and doing something which your brain doesn’t want you to do.
Develop that muscle. If you hate taking bath in the morning, take it! If you hate brushing your tooth before sleep, do it! If you hate eating those healthy fruits, eat it! Tell your ‘head’ you will do what is right and not what he finds pleasure in!
3. Avoid addictive things.
Avoid those chats, applications, games, web series which are highly addictive and cause to develop a certain brain pattern, What I suggest is stay away from your phone. When a person receives notification, brain releases dopamine, the same chemical which is released after smoking cigarette. Your phone is the main cause of laziness and keeping you away from your to-do’s!
4. Burn the back bridge.
Commit to something which you can’t deny! Something that you will have to do! Like I always mentioned, before writing my first book, ‘Think and Win like Dhoni’ I declared on my facebook at my book is coming, now as I wrote it on my wall, there was no way to fall in the Fish Trap!
And what next, wait for my new book coming with Amazon-Westland, it’s a big creative surprise!
All the best!
